A simple and meaningful quote from Aung San Suu Kyi’s book, Freedom From Fear make her felt that as the daughter of General Aung San, she had the duty to get involved to rid military dictator in Burma.

AuNg SaN SuU Kyi a.k.a “Burma’s Ghandi” is one of the world’s most well known woman leaders of democracy. Suu Kyi, as the Burmese opposition leader-the National League for Democracy determine and struggle to get rid Burma from military dictatorship, won the Rafto Prize and Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. However, she was placed under house arrest for 20 years, which from 20 July 1989 till 11 August 2009.

Personal life

Aung San Suu Kyi (Burmese ) was borned on 19 June 1945 in Ragoon, British Burma, third child in her family. Her name is a combination of her father-Aung San, mother-Kyi and her grandmother-Suu.

Her father assassinated when Suu Kyi was 2-year-old.

In 1972, she married with a British professor,Dr. Michael Aris and were gifted 2 sons.

Education

She went to English-run catholic school in Ragoon during her young age and graduated from New Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College (India) in 1964. She further her study at Oxford University and finally completed her PhD at University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies in1985.

Inspiration

As a Theravadin Buddhist, Suu Kyi was inspired by Mohandas Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr., lead her to become a non-violent national hero.

Burmese Election

In the 1990 military junta (general election), the National League for Democracy had won 82% of parliamentary seats (394 of 492 seats), 59% votes and Aung San Suu Kyi was elected to be the Prime Minister of Burma. However, the military invalidate the election result as they refuse to hand over their power to Aung San Suu Kyi. As a result, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest.
