SCOTTISH DRESS AND TARTANS

Prince Charles Edward Stuart known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie” wearing the dress of the Scottish nobility from the 18th century. Therefore, as we all know, these dresses are usually wearing by the Highland Scots in the centuries past. The most usual garment that wearing with the patterned woolen cloth that is known as tartans is the kilt. It is worth nothing when the kilt is not worn by the Lowland Scots which formed the majority of the population of country.

The highland dress that we see today is already modernized during Victorian times. This was undertaken to fit the taste of Queen Victoria her husband, Prince Albert for all the Scottish dresses.

Thus, while the basic garment still traditional, the style and much of the other regalia that including jackets, sporran, kilt hose and garter; certainly the range and formality of tartans which we see today were an invitation of the Victorian gentry.

However, their remains an association of the tartans with the family based grouping of Scotland. Most Scottish surnames have an associated tartan and some have several, which may be classified as modern colours, ancient, subdued or hunting colours and dress colours.
